Consider the following SVG:
<svg id="svg" width="300" height="300" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">
<rect x="0" y="0" width="100" height="100" fill="lightgray"/>
<text x="10" y="20">PASS1</text>
<text x="10" y="40" font-size="14">PASS2</text>
</svg>
Viewed alone, PASS1 and PASS2 are visible on a gray square. If the SVG is embedded though:
<html>
<img src="svg.svg"/>
</html>
PASS2 will be rendered as expected but PASS1 will render very small--one pixel high and just a few pixels across.
